Congratulations! You are starting a new and exciting phase in your life. For most women finding out they are pregnant is a time for joy and celebration but there are also times throughout the pregnancy when women may need some additional support and reflexology is one option for improving wellbeing.
Maternity reflexology can provide a great support throughout your pregnancy reducing feelings of stress or anxiety and boosting your feelings of wellbeing.
Reflexology aims to optimise your physical and emotional health by working on specific reflexology points which correspond to different parts of your body. It is a holistic treatment which is deeply relaxing.
Receiving reflexology during pregnancy also allows you time away from your busy life and provides a comforting place where you can focus purely on yourself and your baby. The importance of this should really not be underestimated.
Reflexology can be used throughout your pregnancy and a full history will be taken to ensure that it is safe and appropriate to carry out a treatment.
This is a time when huge changes are occurring in hormone levels and there can be anxieties and concerns. You may be feeling delighted, anxious, exhilarated weepy and exhausted - sometimes all at once. Reflexology will aim to help by offering relaxation, help to de-stress and offering support.
Second And Third Trimester
As most of the early discomforts are likely to have passed and baby is growing you may experience other symptoms. Reflexology can help you by addressing health issues such as sleeplessness as they arise, and by providing increased feelings of wellbeing and feelings of calm.
Preparation For Labour
As your due date approaches it is useful to have regular reflexology treatments in order to prepare for labour and promote relaxation which will help you and your baby. Your pregnancy will undoubtedly be one of the most exhilarating, exciting and emotional experiences of your life. Reflexology can help you to cope with the huge emotional and physical changes that are taking place. It can be beneficial at all stages of your pregnancy.
There is plenty of anecdotal evidence from women feel they have benefited from reflexology throughout their pregnancies, and 2 studies have shown that.
Reflexology during pregnancy significantly:
- Reduced pain during labour. (1)
- Reduced the length of the first stage of labour. (1)
- Improved quality of sleep in post natal women. (2)
Some studies have also shown positive effects following reflexology on pelvic girdle pain (3) and one study showed that 6 weekly treatments of reflexology prior to giving birth on for women who experienced low back and/or pelvic girdle pain during their pregnancy significantly reduced the second stage of labour by 44.3 minutes (4).
