Do you use Vegan Friendly products?

I often get asked if I use ‘vegan friendly’ products within my Complementary & Beauty Therapy treatments.

The answer is, "yes, I do, as much as possible". Unfortunately I can’t say this is true for all my products, because at present there just isn’t a full range of 100% vegan friendly products available in the Complementary & Beauty Therapy industry .

To be ‘vegan friendly’ the products need to be made without the use of any animal products at all. Conventional make up uses ingredients ranging from diary, beeswax, honey, bugs, insects, chicken feet, chicken bone marrow to parts of cows, pigs and sheep.

To make life even more difficult, many animal ingredients have names that don’t sound like they are animal-derived, so they are not always easy to spot.

Products like moisturising creams may use beeswax to make them creamy, increase the thickness and to hydrate your skin more than a moisturising lotion (which is primarily made of water).

Lipstick, lip salves and other stick-like products  also often contain beeswax, giving them structure, allowing for a smooth application, and keeping them solid. Vegan friendly versions of these products would need to use a combination of plant waxes instead of beeswax.

I have searched out alternative products to ensure the majority of the products I use are vegan friendly; with only a few exceptions due to the nature of the treatment and the availability of suitable products to get the right results.

I contacted suppliers to check how vegan friendly there brands are. I was pleased to find that they were all very happy to provide me with information on their products. For example, a handful of Eve Taylor skin and body care products contain beeswax or honey, so they advised me which alternatives in their ranges I could use instead to make the treatment 100% vegan friendly for my clients.

For me it’s not just about offering vegan friendly products, I also choose quality products that contain no parabens, formaldehyde, petrochemicals or phthalates; as well as being cruelty-free. To be cruelty-free, there should be no form of animal testing at any point in the creation of the product. However, a product can be cruelty-free and not be vegan.

I feel it is essential to give my clients confidence that I have considered the nature of the ingredients and quality of the products I use, to ensure positive results on their skin, hair and nails when they have treatments with me.
