Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD) is the second most common cause of facial pain after dental disorders. Up to 20% of the population may be affected by TMJD
The temporomandibular joint connects the lower jaw to the skull - problems with the joint can cause a range of symptoms including; facial pain, limited mouth opening, headaches, dizziness, muscle spasms and tension. Referred pain to the neck, shoulders and back. Hearing problems, tinnitus and blurred vision.
TMJ Massage can make a big improvement to these symptoms by improving mouth opening, reducing pain and relieving muscle tension.
Massage treatments are adapted to individual symptoms and preferences and can include facial and intra-oral massage, passive stretching, trigger point therapy and myofascial techniques for the face, neck and shoulders.
Claire Gurney - a qualified Pilates Instructor, Physio and Massage Therapist completed a course in a very specialised therapy to treat a common, but frequently under-diagnosed, condition called “temporomandibular joint dysfunction”. Claire developed the condition herself and had to travel to London for treatment. She decided she’d spare other suffers the journey and completed TMJ therapy training to become one of the first practitioners in Norfolk to offer this effective form of treatment.

She returned to Norwich on a permanent basis in 2014 and has been part of the Treat team from day one, initially teaching weekly Pilates classes and individual sessions to individuals, small groups and local businesses in Norwich. She has continued to develop her skills, training to teach Pilates to people living with and recovering from cancer treatment, using exercise to overcome the effects of surgery and limit the impact of fatigue or medication on health and well-being. She is also a trained massage therapist providing Swedish, Sports pregnancy, oncology and “TMJD massage” (for people with issues related to temporo-mandibular joint disorder) at treat Norwich and recently qualified as a physiotherapist.
From her work, training and own experience Claire understands that it is often the quality, not the quantity of movement that determines health, fitness and sporting success. She was drawn to pilates because its principles of alignment, concentration and control emphasis standing, moving and exercising with correct technique. She incorporates these essential pilates techniques into her physiotherapy practice and adapts Pilates classes and sessions to individual needs, often using small equipment or supports to improve technique and make the exercises more effective.
